Have a valid Apple Music subscription on hand but still not convinced about the streaming service’s integration with Apple’s official music application? Then give the open source project Cider a chance.
Available for Windows and Mac, the desktop application uses Apple’s official Apple Music interface to allow secure login to your account and can then be used as an alternative player with full access to all playlists, albums and songs.
Although Cider is an electron application that relies on web technologies under the hood, this is not obvious from the application. In addition, the developers promise from the outset that they have placed great value on an application that is as high-performing as possible and want cider to be optimized for speed wherever possible.
Beautiful to look at, Cider comes with a surprising number of configuration options that you can use to influence both the app’s design and the layout of controls. Private sessions can also be started here, the playback of which is not included in Apple’s recommendation algorithm.
Cider can display notifications for song changes, integrates a lyrics display via Musicmatch and lets you decide whether and where Apple’s animated CD covers should be used.
The app has a mini player, a logical navigation and can be used to a large extent without having to take your hands off the keyboard.
Mac users download Cider directly from the release page of the code portal GitHub from the web and remember that the current version is not yet the final end product, but a “work in progress”. However, the app itself is already very stable and is already a good alternative to the iTunes successor.
