Energy saving lamps are sources of artificial light that employ advanced technology to reduce the amount of electricity used to generate light, relative to traditional filament-burning light bulbs.
Examples of energy saving lamps include:
Fluorescent lamps
A fluorescent lamp, or fluorescent tube, is a low-pressure mercury-vapor gas-discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce visible light. An electric current in the gas excites mercury vapor, which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow. A fluorescent lamp converts electrical energy into useful light much more efficiently than an incandescent lamp. The typical luminous efficacy of fluorescent lighting systems is 50–100 lumens per watt, several times the efficacy of incandescent bulbs with comparable light output. For comparison, the luminous efficacy of an incandescent bulb may only be 16 lumens per watt.
Fluorescent lamp fixtures are more costly than incandescent lamps because, among other things, they require a ballast to regulate current through the lamp, but the initial cost is offset by a much lower running cost. Compact fluorescent lamps are now available in the same popular sizes as incandescents and are used as an energy-saving alternative in homes.
Because they contain mercury, many fluorescent lamps are classified as hazardous waste. The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends that fluorescent lamps be segregated from general waste for recycling or safe disposal, and some jurisdictions require recycling of them.
a Light-emitting diode bulb
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes, releasing energy in the form of photons (Energy packets). The color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photons) is determined by the energy required for electrons to cross the band gap of the semiconductor. White light is obtained by using multiple semiconductors or a layer of light-emitting phosphor on the semiconductor device.

A light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC or LEEC) is a solid-state device that generates light from an electric current (electroluminescence). LECs are usually composed of two metal electrodes connected by (e.g. sandwiching) an organic semiconductor containing mobile ions. Aside from the mobile ions, their structure is very similar to that of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
There are two distinct types of LECs, those based on inorganic transition metal complexes (iTMC) or light emitting polymers. iTMC devices are often more efficient than their LEP based counterparts due to the emission mechanism being phosphorescent rather than fluorescent.
Magnetic induction lamps
Aside from the method of coupling energy into the mercury vapor, these lamps are very similar to conventional fluorescent lamps. Mercury vapor in the discharge vessel is electrically excited to produce short-wave ultraviolet light, which then excites internal phosphors to produce visible light. While still relatively unknown to the public, these lamps have been available since 1990. Unlike an incandescent lamp or conventional fluorescent lamps, there is no electrical connection going inside the glass bulb; the energy is transferred through the glass envelope solely by electromagnetic induction. There are two main types of magnetic induction lamps: external core lamps and internal core lamps. The first commercially available and still widely used form of induction lamp is the internal core type. The external core type, which was commercialized later, has a wider range of applications and is available in round, rectangular and “olive” shaped form factors.
Energy-efficient lighting is favourable amongst many properties for a number of good reasons. Not only does it help reduce electricity bills, but lowers carbon dioxide emissions too, all without reducing the quality of light in our homes.
In fact, for every traditional halogen bulb you switch to with a similarly LED bulb, you can save 5kg of CO2 emissions and £3 in electricity bills.
So, assuming you have the average number of 67 lights across your home, that would result in a saving of 335kg in CO2 emissions and £201 in electricity bills per year.
The beginning of light bulbs
Traditional, or incandescent light bulbs were invented over 100 years ago in 1879. These were extremely inefficient, with only 5% of the electricity being converted into visible light. Although a fantastic invention, we soon began to realize incandescent bulbs were just not sustainable enough – we needed more efficiency.
Halogen light bulbs
The next big launch into the lighting market was the halogen bulb. These were developed by Elmer Fridrich and Emmet Wiley in 1955 and used the same filament technology as traditional bulbs but run at higher temperature, making them slightly more efficient. However, this wasn’t enough, and inventors continued to work on their ideas in order to bring energy efficient lighting to the market.
In 2009, the EU and other European countries began a phase-out of inefficient light bulbs. Both the production and importation of directional mains-voltage halogen bulbs were banned on 1 September 2016, with non-directional halogen bulbs following a ban just two years after.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)
Before the phase out of halogen bulbs though, compact fluorescent lamps were brought to market. by Edward E. Hammer in 1976. These were the first energy efficient bulbs on the market, using around 70-80% less electricity than equivalent traditional light bulbs.
CFLs typically last for around 8,000 hours of use, which is approximately 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs, and 20-25 times longer than halogen.
LED lighting
Due to a massive difference in energy consumption, LEDs have become the most popular, and simply the go-to choice in almost every lighting scenario.
Surprisingly, LEDs were first invented in 1927, but have been developing ever since. 2002 saw the first real adoption of LEDs for residential use as they become commercially available for approximately £80-£100 per luminaire. They then started to become popular in schools, offices and hospitals in 2008, with LEDs now being the main source of lighting everywhere you go.
But what puts LEDs so far above the rest?
Aside from the exceptional colour options, instant brightness and long lifespan, LEDs are known as the optimal choice for energy efficiency.
Due to their high lumen output per watt, LEDs are capable of turning roughly 70% of their energy into light. This makes them much more efficient that traditional bulbs, which waste the majority of their energy through heat.
To put things into perspective, it only takes a 6-watt LED to produce the same amount of light than a 40-watt incandescent does. With a lower temperature too, LEDs are also safer to operate.
An overview of the history of lamps:
1801 – Humphy Davy invented the first electric light, although not for practical use.
1840 – Warren de la Rue, British scientist, experimented with a vacuum tube and electric current to create light; however, it was too costly for commercial use.
1850 – Joseph Wilson Swan, English physicist created a “light bulb” with carbonized paper filaments and an evacuated glass tube, but again, it wasn’t adequate for commercial use.
1874 – Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans patented lamps using carbon rods held between electrodes in glass cylinders filled with nitrogen, which they were unsuccessful in marketing. They sold their patent to Thomas Alva Edison in 1879.
1878 – Thomas Alva Edison began researching how to develop an incandescent lamp and filed his first patent in 1878.
1880 – Edison Electric Company began marketing commercially manufactured light bulbs.
1906 – General Electric Company patented a method to make tungsten filaments for use in incandescent light bulbs.
1910 – William David Coolidge of General Electric improved the process of manufacture to create the longest lasting tungsten filaments.
1920s – The first frosted light bulb was produced, along with adjustable car headlamps and neon lighting.
1930s – One-time flashbulbs for photography were invented along with the fluorescent tanning lamp.
1940s – “Soft light” incandescent bulbs were produced.
1950s – Quartz glass and halogen light bulbs were produced.
1960s – Robert Biard and Gary Pittman, engineers at Texas Instruments, invented the first infra-red LED light, but it was too small for practical every day use.
1970s – Lighting engineers created a fluorescent bulb made for widespread use.
1980s – New low wattage metal halides were created.
1990s – Long life bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) debuted.
2000s – LEDs (light-emitting diodes) have become the most energy efficient light bulbs available with the ability to produce the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb in a 10-watt LED bulb.
