This expansive 1970s era apartment revels in modernist influences, including Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. Concrete coated columns punctuate the interior; few other materials were used: aside from concrete, the interior is predominantly clad in granilite — a mixture made of cement and stone-pastes specially selected for the project — and natural walnut wood that covers almost the whole apartment.

Design of a 230m² apartment, in a building from the 70’s, located in the traditional Jardins neighbourhood, in São Paulo, Brazil.
The project’s concept comes from modernist influences and from the narrative inspired by the contemporary and minimalistic poetry that guides the new way of living. Customer’s passion, Roberto Burle Marx, brazilian landscape master, who had the same profession as the owner, was one of the most influent and complete brazilian modernists.
Concrete coated columns guided the layout of the project, transforming the element in one of its highlights, strengthening the influences and architectural inspirations.
Few elements, such as crude and mineral materials were used: concrete, granilite, a mixture made of cement and stone-pastes specially selected for the project, and also the natural walnut wood that covers almost the whole apartment, synthesising the materials, enrichened the project.
Three main pillars guided the choices for this project which, we classify as a gallery apartment. A clean, sensorial and scenographic architecture, that facilities the connection between the spaces, using few elements, beyond the already citedmineral materials.
A minutious selection of original brazilian furniture from masters of the 50’s and 60’s, another owner’s passion, like: black gold chairs and petal table by Jorge Zalszupin, Jangada Armchair by Jean Gillion, MTF-600 chairs by Geraldo de Barros, Mole Armchair by Sergio Rodrigues, ancient furniture from the middle of the 19th century, by Arnaldo Danemberg’s antiquarian shop and also the dominici’s glass ceiling light fixture. Recognized and awarded designer in the current scenario as Jader Almeida (contemporary archive), completes the select team of the collection.
Contemporary and poetic pieces of art, such as: the photograph of São Paulo, by Claudio Edinger, the metal sculpture by Claudio Alvarez, the bronze head by florian raiss and an ancient photograph of the family’s collection, completes the base of this project, which brings affective memories. Lots of art, history, architectural references and design furniture from the mid-20th century.
In the area of the lunch room integrated to the kitchen, the table by Sergio Rodrigues and the original leather chairs, by Jorge Zalszupin, make, again, presence. Luminaire, unknown author, panned by the owner during his travels around the nordic countries was used, bringing affective memories to a room really present in the owners everyday.
The master bathroom follows the same architectural conception of the rest of the project, covering the walls with granilite. Earthenware and metals from brazillian trademark Deca in a black matte color strengthen the dense and authoral atmosphere. Florian raiss’ pieces of art points art as one of the fundamental pillars of the project.
A selection of elements, raw and mineral materials, such as concrete and terrazzo – a mixture of cement and stone aggregates – were carefully picked for the project to complement the natural walnut wood that covers almost the entire apartment, creating a unique combination of materials and enriching the design. Three fundamental principles have guided the project, which we describe as a gallery apartment. A clean, sensorial, and scenographic architecture that focuses on the connection between the spaces, containing only a few elements apart from the already mentioned mineral materials.
The project features a fine selection of original Brazilian furniture by great artists from the ’50s and ’60s – yet another passion of the owner – such as the Ouro Preto chairs (Artemobília antique store), Pétala coffee table by Jorge Zalszupin (Etel Carmona store), Jangada lounge chair by Jean Gillon (Artemobília antique store), mtf600 chairs by Geraldo de Barros (Dpot store), and Mole armchair by Sérgio Rodrigues (Artemobília antique store).
It also showcases antique items such as a vintage piece of furniture from the mid-19th century (Arnaldo Danemberg antique store) and a glass chandelier by Studio Dominici (Passado Composto store). The collection also includes designs from Jader Almeida (Arquivo Contemporâneo store), a promising and recognized designer who has many award-winning pieces.
Poetic contemporary artworks such as Claudio Edinger’s picture of São Paulo, Claudio Alvarez’s metal sculpture, Florian Raiss’s bronze head sculpture (all from Lume art gallery), and an old photograph from the client’s family collection, are also at the heart of this project that is filled with affective memory, art, history, and references of architecture and furniture design from the mid-20th century.
In the dining room area integrated to the kitchen, yet another table by Sérgio Rodrigues and original leather chairs by Jorge Zalszupin stand out. The lamp, author unknown, was picked out by the owner during trips to the Nordic countries and was used here to add affective memories to this environment, where the owners spend so much time. The master bathroom follows the same architectural approach of the whole project, the floor and walls are covered in terrazzo, all fixtures and hardware are from Brazilian brand Deca and have a black matte finish, creating a dense and original atmosphere. Works by Florian Raiss highlight the importance of art as one of the project’s cornerstones.
