Name: 50% Cloud Artists Lounge
Location: Mile City, Yunnan Province, China
Area: 550 sqm
Year of completion: 2020
Interior design, Lighting design, Decoration, Artwork design: Cheng Chung Design (CCD)
Hong Kong architecture studio Cheng Chung Design has created a restaurant and exhibition space within the cavernous interiors of a brick art installation in Mile City, China.
The restaurant, named 50% Cloud Artists Lounge, occupies one of several distinctive structures in Dongfengyun Town that evoke a giant cluster of termite mounds.
Cheng Chung Design’s (CCD) interior is deliberately pared-back to retain focus on this unusual building, while also forming a backdrop to the artwork that is exhibited throughout it.
The restaurant is situated in a building named “50%Cloud”, which follows the design languages of red brick architectural complexes designed by Luo Xu while at the same time subtly incorporating Art Deco Style to maintain its own unique identity. Without a single steel bar or nail, this “utopia” built on red soil is completely composed of local red bricks and blends into nature. The building looks like a mega art installation and half of a cloud that undulates in the sky. It features solid facades, curved contours, and volumes set at staggering heights.
CCD pays attention to the design of the building entrance in every project, this one is no exception. Inspired by the terrace in Yunnan Province, CCD ingeniously took advantage of the architectural form and gave it a new look. The interior space extends the natural curves of the exteriors, characterized by large-span arches and lofty ceilings. Round openings are carved out on roofs, in order to let daylight filter in. Natural light sources throughout the building are evenly distributed, and people in it can feel the interplay of daylight and cloud shadows.
All design elements are arranged based on light and under skylights. Natural light tells the passage of time throughout the day and creates diversified spatial experiences.
Besides, the thriving greenery inside enlivens the dining atmosphere. Natural light casts onto rough bricks, which are well-matched with soft lighting and tasteful furnishings, together producing an environment that encourages guests to interact with space and nature. The overall interior design turns to dine into fantastic multi-sensory experiences.
This interior design blurs the boundaries between the exterior and interior into a sensual overall experience. Moreover, it is noticeable in every detail that the focus has been placed on people. The construction composed of natural bricks lends the architecture both a strong presence and a natural elegance that manages to balance tradition and a novel approach. Particularly fascinating is how the light enters into the interior of this conically formed building.
CCD-Cheng Chung Design team takes advantage of the building’s great heights and uneven vaults to create overhead lighting effects in the 50% Cloud.Artists Lounge restaurant. The interior design proposal allows the different visual effects and nuances that natural light generates on the brick to be the protagonists in the project. The furniture and the internal distribution respond to the curves of the building and generate spacious atmospheres with an elegant character.
For the design team, the presence of nature and art in the proposal was essential. Trees were found between the restaurant tables creating a sense of continuity with the outdoor vegetation. The works of art related to the culture of the place added to the textures of brick, steel, and wood generate multisensory experiences in the restaurant’s users.Description of project by CCD-Cheng Chung Design
Origin: utopia built on red soil
This project is a restaurant located in Dongfengyun Town, where the local artist Luo Xu conceived several groups of distinctive red brick buildings.

Natural light sources throughout the building are evenly distributed, and people in it can feel the interplay of daylight and cloud shadows.
Design concept: light highlights the existence of all things As Le Corbusier said, “Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in the light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms. “
Light is an essential element in the space. CCD guides, plays with light, and cleverly brings it into the building, where guests can experience the change of light in every minute.
Design approach
All design elements are arranged based on light and under skylights. Natural light tells the passage of time throughout the day, and creates diversified spatial experiences.
CCD team extracts the curved lines of the building and applies them to the entire interior space. Every article in the space is an artwork. The curved steel panel at the entrance leads guests to enter the interior, while adding an artistic touch to the space and evoking imagination as well.
Besides, the thriving greenery inside enlivens the dining atmosphere. Natural light casts onto rough bricks, which are well matched with soft lighting and tasteful furnishings, together producing an environment that encourages guests to interact with space and nature. The overall interior design turns dining into fantastic multi-sensory experiences.
Artwork design
The pixelated sculpture draws inspiration from the tourist attraction “Buddha Hand” in Mile City. The woven artwork looks likes a human head, which symbolizes the wisdom of local people. In addition, the abstract “cloud” sculpture implies infinite combinations and possibilities.
Joe Cheng: We were first approached by Yunnan Urban & Rural Construction Investment Co. to design DongFengYun Hotel Mi’Le – Mgallery, the hotel that sits within Luo Xu’s complex of red-brick domed buildings in Dongfengyun, Yunan province.
They were so impressed by impressed with our design of the hotel that they asked us to design the restaurant, 50% Cloud.
It was to be not only a restaurant but also an art space with an exhibition area, recreation area, coffee bar and a high-end banquet area. You can see original art throughout the entire space. Sociability was the second priority — they want people to be able to communicate with each other and engage in an exchange of ideas.
Dongfengyun has become a new arts and culture base in Yunnan. The series of red brick sculptures was designed by artist Luo Xu, and in addition to 50% Cloud, the surrounding buildings also house other cultural institutions.
CCD focuses on the entrance design and this one is also not to be missed. Inspired by the terraces of Southern China, CCD extracted the architectural form and gave it a new look.
